Research and development projects have been formed to find future initiatives that will improve the efficiency of Coles stores. An example of this is the current trial of diesel and hybrid vans in New South Wales, for home food deliveries. These vans run on diesel, but have the ability to resort to battery power when stationary. To monitor the efficiency and effectiveness of the vans, appropriate equipment has been attached to them, which will then be assessed to determine whether or not their use will increase.
Due to a dramatic loss of turtles off the coast of Australia, Coles has effectively implemented circle shaped hooks, that reduce their threat to any marine life, when fishing. These circular hooks have been developed to replace the traditional long line fishing hooks, that are more likely to be swallowed by turtles, and can severely damage turtles and another marine life when removing if accidentally caught. 3000 hooks have been distributed, and another 1500 are soon to be replaced, following a study that concluded that the mortality of turtles is reduced by up to 90%.
